From English tutor to board member: Maureen Mackay’s journey with Volunteer English Program
Just a few years ago, Gawthrop Greenwood partner Maureen Mackay was volunteering a couple of hours a month tutoring adults in the English language. Now she’s a Volunteer English Program board member with a passion for ensuring VEP services remain available and accessible to the many immigrants and refugees living and working throughout Chester County.
“It’s truly rewarding work that has a significant and immediate impact, not only on the families we work with directly, but also on the community as a whole,” says Mackay, a member of Gawthrop Greenwood’s Family Law practice. “VEP remains the only program in Chester County that is exclusively dedicated to providing free, one-to-one tutoring for English language acquisition and American cultural understanding.”
Gawthrop Greenwood has been a supporter of VEP for more than 15 years, with attorneys volunteering their time as VEP board members and board chair. The firm is also a proud supporter of The Volunteer English Program Celebratory Fundraising Dinner and Musical Revue. This year’s theme is “Building the Chester County Community,” celebrating 31 years of defining achievements by VEP students, tutors, volunteers and community partners.
