J. Stoddard Hayes, Jr., (“Tod”) represents individuals with significant wealth in their estate planning and trust and estate administration matters. He concentrates his practice in succession planning for businesses and farms, as well as matters involving complex generation-skipping transfers. He lectures regularly to professional groups on tax and estate planning topics, including conservation easements, planning for family business owners, and the tax aspects of charitable giving techniques.

Tod is past Chairman of the American Bankers’ Association Trust Division’s Taxation Committee and, in that capacity, testified before the Senate Finance Committee, the House Ways and Means Committee, and the Internal Revenue Service on various topics, including Estate Tax Reform, the repeal of the Generation-Skipping Transfer Tax, the repeal of the Throwback Rules and Reform of the Taxation of Trusts and Estates, revision to regulations governing Private Foundations, and other matters.

Tod serves the community as Treasurer of the Sophia G. Coxe Charitable Trust Fund, Inc., of Drifton, Pennsylvania. 2014 marked the end of his long term serving as a Board Member of the Chester County Community Foundation of West Chester, Pennsylvania.

Tod is a member of the Chester County Bar Association and is currently Chair of the Probate Section. He is also a member of the American Bar Association, Pennsylvania Bar Association, and Maryland Bar Association. He is a member and Past President of the Chester County Estate Planning Council, and a Member and Past President of the Estate Planning Council of Delaware.

Tod has taught various classes and seminars on Estate Administration and Estate Planning topics. At Widener University’s School of Law, he taught the Income Tax of Decedents’ Estates and Trust class from 1988 to 1996; he also taught an Estate, Gift and Generation-Skipping Transfer Tax class. He has been a course planner for the Pennsylvania Bar Institute’s Estate Planning for the Family Business Owner course, and presented on the Fundamentals of Will Drafting and Estate Administration. He also taught Estate Planning with Conservation Easements for the Pennsylvania Bar Institute.

Tod has served as Director of The Haverford Trust Company in Radnor, PA since 2006. Prior to joining Gawthrop Greenwood, he was a Shareholder of Gollatz, Griffin & Ewing in West Chester, PA, from 1994 – 2007, and Director of Christiana Bank & Trust Company in Wilmington, Delaware from 1996 – 2004. He was an associate attorney at Duane Morris & Heckscher in Philadelphia, PA, from 1974 – 1976, and Vice President and Senior Trust Counsel for the Wilmington Trust Company in Wilmington, Delaware from 1976 until 1994.
